My fiction treads that ground between literary fiction and speculative fiction and explores the ideas I discover through my scholarly research. My recent research has been on how history is incorporated into contemporary genre fiction with a focus on speculative fiction and historical fiction, and how we embed aspects of culture into our fiction and change the cultures of those who read our writing. My writing looks complex from the outside, therefore, but it’s all linked. Six published novels frame it, with more due out next year, along with two PhDs (in History and in Creative Writing). I have eighteen short stories published separable and a collection was released this year. I’ve edited two anthologies and worked with over a hundred writers on their work in other ways. I have several non-fiction books. Of these my favourites are The Middle Ages Unlocked, and History and Fiction. I’ve been a professional blogger, published peer-reviewed academic writing, and had a column for three years in a US literary magazine. I am one of only two Australian members of the elite US writers’ cooperative, Book View Café. My awards include the 2010 Ditmar for Best Achievement, a Blue Mountains Writing Fellowship, a Macquarie Bank Longlines Fellowship, an ArtsACT Travel Grant and a Victorian Government Ministry for the Arts Award for a short story. My work has been shortlisted for various Ditmars and the William Atheling Jr Award. I was guest of honour at two Australian conventions and the Croatian Liburnicon convention. My short stories have been included in recommended reading in lists of the worlds’ best science fiction and horror. I want to help the community through my work so I set up learning opportunities for me to develop and places where other writers can connect. For example, I was a co-convenor of the first online international science fiction convention, helped found (and run) Women’s History Month for Australia for its first five years, and have been on more committees than I can count.
